Orbital becomes number one in schools mailing
Monday 23rd August 2010
Orbital Marketing Services Group has purchased the Education Direct mailing division of The Education Company Ltd for an undisclosed sum and will run it as a parallel brand within its JEM Education Marketing Services subsidiary.
The combined business becomes the largest education sector mailing specialist and provides organisations wishing to communicate with schools with solus and shared mailing services, data, litho and laser print, e-mail and fax broadcasting plus a call centre and order processing facility with integrated storage, packing and delivery options.
In the autumn Education Direct will move its equipment and stock from Rochester, Kent, to Orbital’s Sittingbourne site just 12 miles away. All of Education Direct’s 27 office and production staff, including divisional director David Edwards, are retained and consultation is currently underway regarding the move. JEM Director Andre Kleinman will lead the combined business.
The Education Company Ltd, headed by MD Jason Gould, will focus on its core Spirit software operation and Orbital will take a small shareholding in this business.
The 60,000 sq ft Sittingbourne site also houses two other Orbital subsidiaries: MacDonald Mailing, soon to be re-named Orbital Mailing, which runs eight polywrap lines and five envelopers and the digital division of Orbital Print, specialising in short run book production including educational resource books.
Education Direct will keep its own production operation as it is particularly busy at the beginning of each school term. OMSG expect there to be economies of scale from better use of their Sittingbourne site and further production benefits from cross-use of equipment and staff between Education Direct and MacDonald Mailing during their respective peaks and troughs.
